In February of 2017 I flew out to Tucson, Arizona to talk with publisher Shahid Mahmud of Arc Manor about a two book deal. There was supposed to be another author involved, but he dropped out over contractual issues. Since we all had tickets to Tucson, we went ahead and met there. Involved were myself, Shahid and his assistant, Lezli Robyn. We talked the particulars of the series I was to develop, promotion, and editing. The first book is due by February of 2018, and the second six months after that.
Arc Manor is a small publisher probably best known for Galaxy's Edge Magazine, editing by Mike Resnick. They also publish fiction by Robert Heinlein, A E van Vogt, Eric Flint and Chuck Gannon, among others. I am excited to have been given this opportunity to work with a publisher who is going to put maximum effort into my success. We discussed websites and cons for promotion, among other things. And Lezlie was going to start looking for a good military science fiction editor.
About a month later I received word that they had found an editor, and I was surprised at who they found. Bill Fawcett is a well known name in military science fiction, and has been responsible for editing the breakout novels of many a current star. I met Bill and his wife, Jody LynnNye at DragonCon in 2012, my first, and my first ever big time con. I was in Jody's writing workshop. And heard a lot about Bill on different panels that year.
After throwing out a lot of names, we settled on Kinship War. It will be a shared Universe, meaning that once we have established it, other authors will be invited to participate. Unlike Exodus, which gave me free reign to do whatever I wanted to do with stars and star systems, Kinship War will be based, at least initially, in a hundred light year radius of Earth. So I will be doing a lot of research on this one, looking up possible inhabitable star systems, distances between the systems, etc. I will also be creating up to a half dozen intelligent species and many living worlds, and will be mapping orbits of many of the systems. Arc Manor will have a website where I can post all of this information, so anything that doesn't make it into the books will be there for prospective writers and fans alike.
Don't want to give too much away, yet. Stay tuned for more information in the future.
